Position Summary

The Editor is responsible for producing, managing, and distributing local news content across both print and digital platforms in alignment with company-wide digital growth and audience engagement strategies. In addition to editorial leadership, this role includes office, circulation, and production responsibilities essential to the

operation of a small community newspaper. This is a non-exempt, hourly position designed to be performed within a

standard 40-hour workweek. The Editor is expected to manage time efficiently, prioritize tasks, and coordinate

deadlines to avoid working more than 40 hours per week.

Editorial Responsibilities

– Plan, write, edit, and /or proofread local news, features, editorials, and community content for print and digital platforms

– Ensure accuracy, fairness, and adherence to journalistic standards and company editorial policies

– Develop weekly editorial plans that coordinate print deadlines with digital publishing schedules

– Maintain working relationships with community members, organizations, and contributors

– Review, edit, and manage letters to the editor, public notices, and submitted materials

– Update and manage the publication’s website and digital platforms in coordination with company-wide digital strategy

– Publish timely digital-first content when appropriate to expand reach and audience engagement

– Create, edit, and post basic multimedia content, including videos and photos, to support storytelling and promote print and digital readership

– Use digital platforms to promote print content, subscriptions, and community engagement initiatives

Circulation Responsibilities

– Manage subscriber records, renewals, and delivery lists for both print and digital subscriptions

– Coordinate with carriers or vendors responsible for newspaper distribution

– Monitor circulation activity and prepare required circulation and digital performance reports

– Support company initiatives aimed at increasing subscriptions and reader retention

Production, Layout & Design Responsibilities

-Manage layout and placement of all digital pages, to include graphics, photos, videos, and stories 

-Coordinate ad placement with sales staff to meet production deadlines for digital and print products

-Prepare master layout for print product, to include placement of images, graphics, headlines, stories, and photos . 

-Review proofs for accuracy, quality and print readiness 

Maintain working proficiency in Adobe InDesign and Adobe Photoshop sufficient to independently design, format, and adjust editorial pages and images if necessary

– Submit final approved pages to the printer within scheduled production timelines

Work Environment

 This position is primarily office-based, but does include attendance at off-site meetings and events. It involves regular computer use, interaction with community members, and routine production functions typical of a weekly newspaper operating across print and digital platforms.
