Graphic Designer / Production Specialist

Position Overview

The Graphic Designer / Production Specialist plays a critical role in producing high-quality print and

digital content for a weekly newspaper group with daily news online.  This position blends creative design, ad production, and page layout responsibilities with a strong focus on meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

This individual will work closely with sales, editorial, and management teams to create compelling

advertisements, design newspaper pages, and support revenue-generating initiatives across print and

digital platforms.

Core Responsibilities

  1. Advertising Design & Revenue Support
  • Design print and digital advertisements for local businesses
  • Collaborate with sales team to develop effective ad concepts and campaigns
  • Assist in creating spec ads and sales materials to help close deals
  • Ensure ads meet client expectations while maintaining newspaper standards
  • Resize and adapt ads for multiple publications when needed
  1. Newspaper Layout & Production
  • Design and paginate weekly newspaper pages using layout software
  • Flow editorial content, photos, and ads into clean, readable layouts
  • Maintain consistency in typography, branding, and style guidelines
  • Prepare files for press, ensuring accuracy and print-readiness
  • Meet strict weekly deadlines without sacrificing quality
  1. Digital & Promotional Design
  • Create graphics for websites, social media, and e-editions
  • Design promotional materials such as special sections, event promotions, and subscription

campaigns

  • Assist in building visual content that drives reader engagement
  1. Collaboration & Communication
  • Work closely with editors, sales reps, and management on projects and initiatives
  • Communicate clearly with internal teams and occasionally with clients
  1. File & Workflow Management
  • Organize and maintain ad files, templates, and archives
  • Ensure correct naming, storage, and version control of all assets
  • Follow standardized production workflows across multiple newspapers

Qualifications

  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator)
  • Strong understanding of print production and layout design
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines in a daily/weekly cycle
  • Good communication and teamwork skills
  • Attention to detail and accuracy

Preferred Experience

  • Experience in a newspaper, magazine, or print production environment
  • Familiarity with small-market advertising and local business needs
  • Basic understanding of digital marketing and social media graphics
